Valeska Onken is Senior Programme Advisor in the Governance and Conflict Department of the GIZ Headquarter in Eschborn. She has been working in the field of displacement and migration for the past 15 years. She graduated in Public Policies and Administration from Potsdam University and with a Master of Forced Migration at the Refugee Studies Center of the University of Oxford. From 2005-2011, she worked for the United Nations (UNHCR, UNDP, and IOM) in South Sudan, Kenya and Geneva. Since 2012 she has joined GIZ to work on the growing portfolio at the nexus of migration governance and development. Her current focus is developing and advising German and EU-funded migration projects, worldwide and especially in Africa, such as a migration governance project with the African Union, migration policy advice to the Government of Niger and the EUTF funded Better Migration Management project in the Horn of Africa region
