Professor Kuijer is a member of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the ‘Venice Commission’) in respect of The Netherlands. He has extensive knowledge of other Council of Europe mechanisms having been the Chair of an intergovernmental working group on the longer-term future of the system of the European Convention on Human Rights and having defended his country in various cases before the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.
He currently serves as the Legal Adviser of the Ministry of Justice and Security in The Netherlands. He is part-time human rights professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and deputy justice at the Court of Appeal in Arnhem. He has been involved in various programmes on legal system reform and human rights training in Europe, Africa and America. He is a member of the editorial board of the Netherlands law journal for human rights law (NTM) and the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law.
